15/05/2013 (Wed) Happy Valley, Turf, B Course Hong Kong Jockey Club
15/05/2013 (Wed)   Night  Race 8 races ,
Meeting Start: 7:15pm

Happy Valley, Turf, B Course

With its slopes and tight bends, Happy Valley is not a racetrack suited to every runner. Tony Cruz, however, has had unusually good luck with the 3YOs he takes there. Let’s see if we can find out why!
The Tony Cruz-trained 3YO CALIFORNIA BOUNTY$13.00 $7.00 (Race 7, No. 9) is making his first attempt at Happy Valley this Wednesday after scoring 1 win and 1 third in two starts at Sha Tin. Since the 2010/11 season, Cruz has taken six 3YOs to Happy Valley after winning at Sha Tin and they really hit it out of the park! Will he have the same luck with CALIFORNIA BOUNTY?
It won’t be easy, as CALIFORNIA BOUNTY competes against course-and-distance specialists like SIMPLE (No. 3), the Dennis Yip-trained runner that has scored 1 win and 2 seconds in three starts over course and distance and has winning jockey Zac Purton back in the saddle, and LONDON CHINA TOWN (No. 7) who ran 4th to CALIFORNIA BOUNTY at Sha Tin last time out.
Will Zac make it SIMPLE? Or being a course and distance specialist, will LONDON CHINA TOWN be able to turn the tables? Or will CALIFORNIA BOUNTY join Tony’s list as another of his 3YO Valley winners?

This season, there have been seven meetings on the B course at Happy Valley, and each time Caspar Fownes has brought home a few winners. This Wednesday, he has entered seven runners, including WINDICATOR POWER who has won twice over 1200m at Happy Valley and now competes in the Class 3 special condition event.
There have been seven meetings on the B course at Happy Valley, and the Caspar Fownes stable has turned in the best performance. Not only has he had a winner on each occasion, but twice he’s had two!
This Wednesday, Fownes sends out seven, including WINDICATOR POWER (Race 4, No. 1) in the Class 3 special condition event. Since the 2008/09 season, Fownes has entered eight runners in Class 3 special condition events and racked up 4 wins, 1 second and 1 fourth – only two runners missed the frame! What’s more, WINDICATOR POWER has scored 2 wins, 2 seconds and 1 fifth in five starts over 1200m at Happy Valley. Will WINDICATOR POWER be like his stablemate DREAM BUILDER and win this special event?
As for the other contenders Race 4, the only one that has run a first-3 place last time out is SUPREME ESSENCE (No. 2), the Michael C W Chang runner that placed third behind IMPECCABLE in the Ewo Challenge Trophy over course and distance. And it’s worth noting that the second horse in that race, WINNIE’S HORSE has since backed up and won at Sha Tin.
So what do you think? Does SUPREME ESSENCE have what it takes to win? Or will WINDICATOR POWER give Caspar another victory on the B Course? Find out this Wednesday at Happy Valley Racecourse!

PLAIN RED BANNER broke through for his first win last Wednesday and is backing up just a week later in the same class and winning distance of 1650m. You may have your doubts, but it seems that whenever Ricky P F Yiu backs up his last start HV winners within a week, they usually perform well!
Since Ricky P F Yiu received his trainer’s license in the 1995/96 season, he has backed up last start HV winners over the same distance within one week on only five occasions. Of these, he has racked up an impressive record of 3 wins, 1 second and 1 third – none of them have missed the first 3!
PLAIN RED BANNER$9.00-2nd (Race 5, No. 10) was handed a 5-point penalty after his last win, and this time out will be ridden by the 10lb claimer Dicky C Y Lui, carrying only 111lbs, which is 2lbs less than his last start. This season, when IMPECCABLE was ridden by Lui backing up after a win, he racked up a quick double. Taking into account the statistics, will PLAIN RED BANNER be able to achieve back-to-back wins?
Yiu has entered five runners this Wednesday, and apart from PLAIN RED BANNER, he has used trump cards for YOU ARE THE ONE$9.00-3rd (Race 3, No. 11) and GREAT SPIRIT (Race 6,No. 1), both 1200m races. This season, Yiu has used trump cards 19 times for 1200m Valley events, and has earned 5 wins, 1 second and 4 thirds, which translates into a greater than 50% first-3 strike rate. Having never missed the money in four starts over course and distance, will GREAT SPIRIT continue to perform well?
Find out this Wednesday night at Happy Valley!
